Different Ages have Different Stages:
Young babies as new born may not know what the pictures in a book mean, but they can focus on them, especially faces, bright colors, and different patterns. When you read or sing nursery rhymes, you can entertain and soothe your infant.
Newborns – 4 months (Infant):
The first essential books for newborns are the black and white books. These high-contrast books are advised for infants, because of their under developed eye sights these babies are color blind.
You can also use cloth books with black and white images of animals/objects etc during tummy time.
Between 4–6 months:
Now baby may begin to show more interest in books. Also little one will grab and hold books, but will mouth, chew, and drop them as well. So now you have to choose books made of Sturdy vinyl,
Cloth books with bright colors, crinkling sound, repetitive words, rattle sound will be preferred by baby.
Snuggle books, Bath books due to their light weight are best for this age.
Between 6–12 months:
Now baby starts to understand that pictures represent objects, and may start to show that they like certain pictures, pages, or even entire stories better than others. Your baby will respond while you read, grabbing for the book and making sounds. By 12 months, your little one will turn pages (with some help from you).
Choose Foam books with different colors, Cloth books and Board Books with Animals, Sea creature, bugs, and bright prints.
Other tactile books such as puppet books, sound books etc can be introduced.
Touch feel books from Baby Touch are best know for this, also Usborne “That’s not my” series has amazing collection of Touch and feel board books.
Board books would be your best friend during this phase. They are sturdy and most withstand the wear and tear. These are best enjoyed by children of this age.
I’d highly recommend start reading stories to the child alongside so that the child develops an interest in books and not just sees it as another activity with fancy books!
After 1.5 years introduce few paperbacks, hardcovers and show how to gently use them. Most kids this age will not handle them well independently but they should be familiar with those.
Lift-the-flap books, Pop-Up books, Push and pull, Sound books are highly recommended.
2 years onwards:
If you have been reading regularly, the child would’ve developed an interest in stories by now. The challenging part is that from now on the variety increases. As mentioned earlier pick books after some research and start read out. Spend time with a book, ask questions, engage the child, let him think, answer, ask! Experiment with authors, themes and you’ll slowly understand what he/she likes best.
Start with classics if have no idea to where to begin with!!
Between 3-5 years:
The suggested age for most picture books is 3 plus. There is a vast world of books and you’d have ample choice. This is the best time to introduce variety in themes and add on some non-fiction books. Start with basic ones.
After picture books, the child would gradually move on to phonics (Usborne), reader books these come in various levels – Usborne, Ladybird. Basic chapter books, early reading and finally fiction! Please remember that there is no right age for these, so do not feel pressurized by what others are reading. Give it time, let children enjoy books; do not make it a task for them!
Between 5-7:
The big books with curated information are best to be introduced by now kid has his/her own choice and preference of books.
Hope this information helps choosing books for your babies.
