How to choose Books | Choosing right books for Baby
- 2025-01-10
When it come to selecting books for our little one, it becomes confusing as these days there are numerous of books available so how to select the right book.
No doubt all the books are written with lots of love and taken a lot of efforts to bring in the best. But what might suit to one baby may not necessarily be liked by other. So here I am giving certain points to keep in mind while choosing books for our little one.
We have given the names of best authors known worldwide:
Authors such as Eric Carle, Julia Donaldson, Oliver Jeffers, Dr Seuss, Karen Katz, Margaret Wise Brown, Rod Campbell, Sandra Boynton. You pick any book by them and you will never go wrong.
But here we have tried to give some pointer which you may follow to get the best suitable book:
Understand your baby’s preference
For this we would suggest to expose children to various types of books initially, and get the cues from your child. Many a times parents force their choices on baby, where they intend to give the best to baby but this doesn’t always work right. Keeping in mind that every child is an Individual and their preferences can vary from their parents, so choose accordingly.
Book selves shuffling/ Book Rotation
We always recommend parents to rotate books and this has it’s own importance. Sometimes child may not show interest in particular book, Keep them aside for few days or weeks and try again. The books used at 1st year of baby can also be used in 2nd and 3rd year but in a different way. So reuse the books!
As an example I would take My baby’s favourite book and renowned classic Very Hungry Caterpillar- this book is with us for 18 months now initially we used it as bedtime story, after that we played spot the object like leafs, tree, moon, sun, apple, caterpillar etc. Now we play finger the colors, count the fruits, days of the Week, Numbers.. And this will continue until she reads it herself.
Include variety
This is vitally important to include variety in Contents, themes, authors, illustrators Search on Google for book rating, go for YouTube reviews of books they have Read aloud for many books. This will help you make a right decision.
Sustainable parenting- Engage with other parents, know from them how it worked for them. You can always borrow books from them and see if your child takes interest. Also pass on the books of you child so that some other parent gets benefited.
Choosing Quality over Quantity
Requesting you all to buy 1 book in place of 2. We have heard from many parents that these books seem Pricey, once you browse through these books you will come to know the worth. Take children to library and bookstores. Surfing there you may get an idea which book is cost what and
why is it so. Agreed to our current situation where we are bound to stay home and shop online but trust me those books do justice to the money we pay.
Hope these point ms have helped clearing some doubts in mind. But I would always say That everyone Have their tastes and preferences which could be entirely different from the other. And not all recommendations will suit us.
Also once you and you child start enjoying reading it will be clear to what type go for.
